A Campaign To Get Los Angeles Counted
When COVID hit mid-Census, Los Angeles—already the nation’s hardest-to-count region—faced an even bigger challenge. Enter Fenton. In partnership with the California Community Foundation, we launched We Count LA, a multilingual, multicultural digital campaign that became ground zero for census outreach. Backed by a coalition of 115+ community groups, we transformed a moment of crisis into a moment of connection—empowering trusted local voices to drive participation and make sure every Angeleno counted.

CHALLENGE
The 2020 Census was already underway in Los Angeles, the “hardest-to-count” region in the U.S., when COVID-19 halted all in-person outreach efforts. Due to COVID and the local shelter-in-place requirements, California Community Foundation sought out an innovative communications partner to ensure all voices were counted.
APPROACH
Fenton worked with the California Community Foundation to create We Count LA, a multilingual, multicultural campaign run in concert with a coalition of 100+ community organizations. The website and digital platforms we built took on a new, more urgent role in the campaign to ensure an accurate census count in Los Angeles. Fenton adapted the website to be a robust digital resource center and interactive hub for local residents and community organizations alike.
IMPACT
California Community Foundation’s We Count LA campaign convened a powerful coalition of 115+ community-based organizations (CBOs) across the region to count historically under-counted populations, coordinated and united under one region-wide campaign. As trusted messengers with deep relationships and connections in their respective communities, the campaign’s multilayered approach supported CBOs to be faces and voices of the census, encouraging the diverse and vulnerable communities of Los Angeles County to participate in the 2020 Census.
