The Senior Vice President is responsible for the day-to-day management of the office as well as its continued success and growth. In addition to ensuring all clients receive excellent, high-impact, quality service from Fenton, attracting and retaining clients, and managing and mentoring senior staff, the Senior Vice President is responsible for the financial health of the office and must ensure that appropriate administrative procedures are in pace.

The Senior Vice President sits on the senior leadership team for the firm. Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Client Relations

  • Supervising large practice area (e.g., education, youth and families, public health, environment) 
  • Overseeing the execution of projects and grants to maintain Fenton’s reputation for high quality media relations and strategy development
  • Providing the highest level of strategic counsel to clients to foster a trusted advisor relationship with each
  • Ensuring that work produced and disseminated by job team is of the highest quality
  • Ensuring the assigned clients receive regular status reports and budget updates
  • Conducting strategic planning for individual organizations and issue movements
  • Writing contracts, grant proposals, strategy memos, and foundation reports
  • Overseeing the development of strategy documents, communication plans, press kits, and other collateral by staff
  • Conduct trainings for clients and when necessary such as media training, storytelling, message development, etc.
  • Advising on a range of public interest media campaigns
  • Pitching key, top level national reporters, senior level funders and potential allies
  • Leading crisis communications strategies
  • Monitoring client budgets, and if necessary, intervening with assigned account lead to fix budget issues
  • Ensuring direct reports meet or exceed weekly billing requirements
  • Producing budget projections to VP of Administration for weekly financial meetings
  • Additional duties as assigned
  • Pitching and securing new business, focusing on potential clients who share Fenton’s progressive social perspective and commitment to sound environmental practices
  • Playing a critical role in new business efforts for the office, including setting appropriate revenue goals with mid-level staff
  • Meeting revenue goals established in advance with Managing Director
  • Leading pitch teams
  • Reviewing proposals and budgets for new accounts
  • Developing and writing proposals
  • Managing job teams and individual staff
  • Assuming an office-wide role in training and mentoring staff
  • Projecting hours needed from staff assigned to your accounts, working with other senior staff to distribute billable hours among junior staff as necessary
  • Projecting in senior management team meetings and giving input on the firm’s growth and success
  • Participating in regular strategy meetings with senior staff on organizational goals, growth and vision
  • Managing the office in the Managing Director’s absence and taking and active leadership role within the office at all times
  • Attending staff/job team meetings and providing input and feedback on business, including client service, staff development, and office procedures
  • Maintaining effective and efficient office structure through proper selection processes and coordination with Human Resources

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Minimum Bachelors’ degree in Public Relations, Communications, Advertising, Political Science, English or related field
  • 10 years’ experience in public interest advocacy, or demonstrated equivalent experience in advocacy/political public relations
  • 10 years’ staff management and mentoring experience, including direct management of a staff of 6 individuals at varying careers levels
  • Strong project management skills
  • Demonstrated issue expertise in one or more of Fenton’s issue areas
  • Experience in a public relations or advertising agency highly desirable; firm understanding of client billing process, client contracts and customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client account and budgets
  • Demonstrated political networking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to pitch and land new business skills
  • Excellent news sense and political savviness, as well as knowledge of print and electronic news media
  • Well-established network on new business leads and contacts
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively – both verbal and nonverbal, with various levels of staff, clients, contactors and media
  • Experience writing proposals
  • Ability to interact and perform in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness, optimism and flexibility in approach to project assignments
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Suite, Lexis-Nexis, as well as research Internet skills
