Fenton Fellowship

Giving young leaders a chance to have real life experience on the front lines of social change communications

Fellows

Fenton Fellowship

The Fenton Fellows program is designed to give young leaders a chance to have real life experience on the front lines of social change communications. Our team members mentor Fellows as they work alongside our staff to develop and implement leading communications strategies that help build a more just, equitable and sustainable world. The fellowship is open to students or graduates and is a paid position.

Not your typical internship, Fenton’s Fellowship program presents its participants with a tangible opportunity to nurture and use the skills needed to succeed in a career centered on progressive communications. During their time at Fenton, Fellows will work on a range of different issues, from stopping climate change to ensuring everyone has the right to marry. We work to pair your interests with our clients, and push Fellows to step outside their comfort zone and explore new interests. All Fellows will be trained in digital communications, media monitoring, messaging, pitching and research. We also offer specialized Fellowships with our digital, creative and earned media teams.

From cookies at staff meetings and good-natured pranks, to sending around our favorite gifs, the Fenton office culture is one of community and achievement. Our Fellows have gone on to work in government, media, communications and technology — and some still work right here at Fenton!

If you have any questions email lgomez@fenton.com.

Applications for fellowship positions are currently closed. Please check back soon for information about upcoming openings for Spring 2019!

Where Are Past Fellows Now?

Marcus Samuel

Fall 2015

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
My favorite thing about the fellowship…is well two things. First, the different tasks I was able to do ranging from media monitoring to community management of social channels to media relations were really great and I think it’s awesome that the fellowship allows you to get a taste of all the different things Fenton does. Second, the people here at Fenton are really wonderful genuine people that want to help you and see you succeed and that’s great thing to have as you start your career.

Fall 2015

What they’re doing now:
I’m starting up my own business! My company is called Avocurl, which is a line of chemical free, all-natural & organic hair products infused with avocado.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
Getting to take photographs for JUST Water during Afropunk festival in Brooklyn, NY.

Conrad Contreras

Summer 2015

What they’re doing now:
I’m currently managing the digital strategy of the organization and our 5 policy teams at the Greenlining Institute as the Communications Manager.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
My favorite part about the Fellowship was the hands-on experience I received from pitching and securing coverage in media outlets for the Annie E. Casey Foundation KIDS COUNT Data Book.

Natasha Leonard

Summer 2015

What they’re doing now:
I’m still working and learning at Fenton! Following my fellowship I was hired as an Account Coordinator, so I’m lucky enough to still be working with this brilliant and passionate group of people. I’ve gained more issue area experience and continue to learn something new everyday.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
The combination of mentorship and responsibility given to you as a fellow is incredible. I was constantly inspired by my co-workers and they offered vital feedback that helped me grow, but I was also trusted to do real, substantive work. My team of supervisors constantly pushed me to try my hand at new aspects of the communications field, and it was amazing to know that the work I did was valued. Not only that, but it had real-world impact!

Jessica Moise

Winter 2015

What they’re doing now:
I’m currently working on research projects for the department of Political Science at Monmouth University. I’m also editing my Master’s thesis with the hopes of getting it published.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
My favorite part about the Fellowship was the opportunities to work on a variety of projects for multiple clients. For example, I was able to conduct research for new business proposals on a wide range of critical social change issues, from global health to higher education to safe communities.

Sarah Grossman

Fall 2013

What they’re doing now:
I’m a reporter at The Huffington Post. After my fellowship, I was hired at Fenton and worked there for over two years on issues of education and poverty, with clients from the Harlem Children’s Zone to the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
My favorite thing about the Fellowship was the sheer variety of skills I was able to develop in such a short time. A typical day could include anything from helping to write a new messaging platform for an education NGO to pitching stories to media for an environmental group. Oh and of course, sharing memes and articles with coworkers over Slack.

Morgan Romey

Fall 2014

I just graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Political Science, and now I am working as an Associate at GLG (Gerson Lehrman Group.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
My favorite part of my Fenton Fellowship was how much responsibility I was given right off the bat. I was able to write reports, interact with clients, learn about digital software and have my opinions influence project decisions from day one, which was really exciting and encouraged me to continue to learn and grow.

Kim Truong

Fall 2016

What they're doing now:

Now an Account Executive at Fenton, Kim manages small to mid-size teams, projects, and budgets, working with our agency’s digital and earned media specialists to counsel our clients in the health tech, global development, and racial justice spaces.

Favorite thing about the Fellowship:
Her favorite aspect of the fellowship was the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the communications world on a variety of different social issues and explore everything from pitching journalists to writing message boxes and running social media analytics.
